The One Thing Missing From Your Skincare Routine (It's Not What You Think)

We saw so many broken down barriers this winter. Most of the new clients we were treating thought that what they needed was more exfoliation and something active to clear the skin. There was redness and a sand paper feeling to the skin along with some flaking. Our clients they thought this meant that their skin was dry and there was too much dead skin, but in fact it was the complete opposite.

So many times we are so ready to get started on active acids. Without guidance you can easily pile on the Paula's Choice BHA, along with some Sunday Riley 15% Vitamin C Serum and on top of that a little Tretinoin that your derm prescribed. You're layering your moisturizer like crazy but things are not looking any better. After a few weeks the skin stings and the products now give you a burning sensation. And you think to yourself, if it burns/stings it means its working.

These symptoms are an good indication of a broken down skin barrier. I know you're probably like what in the world is that. Let me explain. The skin barrier aka the Acid Mantle is a layer of skin that protects all the other layers from allergens and bacteria. When you use very harsh cleansers, lots of different exfoliators or acids your skin start to loose the battle because these ingredients will begin to weaken that layer. You'll start to see those signs I talked about earlier and it can even trigger acne.

So the priority now becomes to heal the skin first, calm inflammation and reduce redness. Once this happens-usually takes a couple weeks then we can go ahead and introduce acids, serums, exfoliators and retinols. That's exactly what we did with our clients these last couple of weeks and we saw so much improvement with them using the right products.

Check out these results!

Our client had all the symptoms of a broken down barrier. I had her stop all the products she was previously using and only use the skincare regimen I put together for her.

This was 1 month apart with just skincare. During her first visit we only did a barrier repair treatment that consisted of an oxygen treatment.

We focused on healing and hydrating. She initially thought she was going to have to get acne treatments and that was not the case when she came back 1 month later.

If you are currently experiencing any stinging, burning, flaking and a sand paper feeling its time to cut back on everything except cleanser, moisturizer and spf. Introduce beta glucan, this will help the skin heal. Make sure your cleanser does not have any Sodium lauryl sulfate this is a foaming agent that makes your cleansers super foamy and that tends to over dry the skin.
