Root Cause Acne: The Hidden Triggers You’ll Never Spot Without Testing

Preparing for an epigenetic hair analysis to find the root cause of acne

You’re doing all the right things. Eating clean, using great skincare, maybe even taking a lineup of supplements. So why does your skin still act like it’s in charge?

Here’s the thing: breakouts that keep coming back often point to root cause of acne hiding under the surface, the kind you’ll never spot without deeper testing.

In this post, I’m sharing real client cases where the root cause had nothing to do with the usual suspects… and everything to do with what we found through deeper testing.

Root Cause Acne: The Part Most People Miss

Acne isn’t always about oil, clogged pores, or hormones you see on a standard lab test. Sometimes it’s about something deeper. Blood sugar imbalance, nutrient deficiencies, detox overload, or a gut issue that’s been flying under the radar.

And here’s the truth: you can’t always “eat clean” or “use the right products” your way out of it. This is why I lean on a test-first, inside-out acne healing approach. So we’re not just treating symptoms, we’re uncovering the why.

A few real-life examples from my clients:

  • M. had been breaking out since she was 12. No gut infections showed up on testing, all her basic blood work looked “normal,” but her fasting insulin was through the roof. Once we understood the hormonal shifts driving her breakouts and how elevated blood sugar was playing into it. She was so relieved to know she wasn't making up other symptoms in her head.

  • S. was sure dairy was her trigger. Turns out her body was under serious pressure in ways most people wouldn’t imagine — drained detox and energy systems, hormone and inflammation imbalance, an overloaded immune system and gut, and even radiation exposure.

  • P. had “perfect” hormone labs, and the only deficiency her OBGYN flagged was Vitamin D. She ate clean, worked out, and always checked with me before adding new vitamins or supplements. On paper, she was doing everything right. But her hair analysis showed immune stress, oxidative overload, detoxification issues, and nutrient depletion — all of which were quietly keeping her breakouts alive.

Why I don’t just throw supplements at someone and hope for the best

Guessing wastes time, money, and your skin’s patience. You can be:

  • Taking probiotics when your gut bacteria are already balanced

  • Cutting foods that aren’t even causing inflammation

  • Chasing “hormonal acne” when the real problem is detox overload

That’s why I test first. Always.

Your body is smart. It’s designed to get rid of what doesn’t belong and keep things in balance.

But if your skin is still breaking out after doing all the right things, there’s usually a reason hiding under the surface. And it’s not always what you think.

I’ll just say this: once you see the whole picture, the way you approach your skin completely changes. And that’s when the real transformation begins.
