This Could Be Why Your Moisturizer Isn't Working

These past few week my skin has been feeling a little dry and it seems like most of you are too. This is pretty common during the colder months. I don't know about you but for some reason I just don't drink as much water during these months. So no matter how much moisturizer you put on it just doesn't seem to get better. I know what you're thinking... This is going to be all about how you need to drink more water. Ha not at all, well kinda. But let me explain. You know we always get down to the science.
You've heard me talk about the skin barrier all of 2025. An although that definitely is a factor I'm going to introduce you to another little fun skin term- TEWL. This is Transepidermal Water Loss. Your skin does this! Basically it's when the water in your skin evaporates out causing dehydration. There a several factors that cause this, a compromised barrier being one of them. Low humidity can be another. So no matter how much water you're drinking your skin is just not able to keep it. This is where we recommend a thicker moisturizer at night or Aquaphor. Before you get scared with Aquaphor, it's acne safe but you don't want to use it too often.
Now if this doesn't solve the dehydration problem there could be one more thing going on. You're not getting enough electrolytes. When I ask clients how much water they drink and they tell me- A LOT. I ask 2 more questions.
How much is a lot?
Are you drinking it with electrolytes?
Remember that you should be drinking half your body weight in ounces. But the thing is that if that water does not contain electrolytes your body will flush it right out. That's why you go pee 20 times a day when you drink that gallon of water. The other things is your body prioritizes your other organs first, that's where 75% of the water you drink goes. So your skin technically only gets about 25% of the water you drink if its lucky. So charge up that water and add some electrolytes. You can do a simple little concoction of water, pinch of sea salt and a little baking soda. This will provide a charge to the water, making it easier for your body to retain it. It's only a pinch of each you shouldn't be able to taste either ok this is no salt gargle.
And my favorite you can opt for an electrolyte like LMNT. You know we are all about acne safe and clean ingredients especially no sugar and this checks all the boxes. I've had a few clients try it already and they love it!
