Sweet Tooth Sabotaging Your Acne?

I recently saw a post from a Biochemist that talked about how foods impact our blood sugar levels. You know me I love research so I did a little more digging.

It turns out that wether you have store bought orange juice vs freshly squeezed orange juice. Your body responds to it the same way, it doesn't care which is the source of the sugar, the molecules are the same!

Once that sugar spike happens it triggers your pancreas to release a hormone called Insulin. When you consume lots of sugary stuff, the overload of insulin can indirectly increase testosterone levels. When testosterone levels rise it causes the glands in your skin to produce more oil, which in return clogs the pores and makes it a perfect breeding ground for acne. Not to mention that sugar also increases inflammation.

Realistically it's hard to stay away from sugar, it's in everything. So instead of doing a completely overhaul of your pantry here are a few little tips that can help keep those blood sugar levels nice and balanced.

  1. Always opt for a savory breakfast over a sweet breakfast. This not only will keep your blood sugar levels stable, it will also help reduce cravings and fatigue.

  2. Never coffee on an empty stomach, and drink your coffee till after your breakfast. (Coffee on an empty stomach raises cortisol your stress hormone).

  3. There is a recommended order in which to eat your macros (Proteins, Fats, Carbs). The theory is that you eat your veggies first, proteins seconds and any carbs last.

  4. So what about dessert? You don't have to necessarily skip that just make sure to save it till after your meal. The sugar will get slowed down by the other food already in your stomach, which will create a smaller glucose spike.

  5. Quantity does matter! The sugar spike from 20 cookies is definitely higher and will take your body longer to stabilize that 1 cookie. Always have proteins or fats before or with those cookies to reduce sugar spikes.

  6. If you do have a couple of those cookies, make sure to move your body afterwards. Go for a walk, have a 15 min dance session to the new Bad Bunny album. This will help get used by your muscles for energy.

For the last 5 months I have drastically cut back on sugars and noticed a direct correlation with the acne on my cheeks. If I do have sugar it will typically be things sweetened with stevia, erythritol or Monk Fruit and this has made a huge difference and has also kept my cravings under control.

If you want to take it even 1 step further you can opt for more foods that are low glycemic, whose Glycemic Index is less that 55. These are foods that cause a very small rise in blood sugar levels. These are foods like: Apples, Carrots, Chickpeas, Cherries, Broccoli, Strawberries, Sweet Potato, Blueberries and many more.
