Chin & Jawline Breakouts: It’s Not Always Hormones

When most people notice breakouts on their chin and jawline, the first thought is often: “It must be hormonal.” And while that’s sometimes true, it’s not the whole story.

As an acne specialist, I’ve seen firsthand how breakouts in these areas can also be triggered by surprising everyday habits—ones that have nothing to do with your hormones.

Let’s talk about a few sneaky culprits I often uncover during consultations and client check-ins:

1. Sleeping with Non-Acne Safe Lotion on Your Hands

It might sound innocent, but your favorite hand cream could be contributing to your breakouts. If you tend to tuck your hands under your chin while sleeping, any pore-clogging ingredients from your lotion can transfer to your face overnight, leading to clogged pores.

2. Resting Your Chin on Your Hands During the Day

You might not even notice you’re doing it. Whether you're deep in thought at work or scrolling on your phone, resting your chin on your hand introduces bacteria, oil, and debris from your hands directly onto your skin—especially if your hands aren’t freshly washed.

3. Cuddling Your Furry Friends

This one’s a tough one—I’ve experienced it myself. Snuggling with your dog or cat after a long day feels great, but their fur carries dirt, dander, and bacteria that can easily transfer to your face, especially if you nuzzle up close. Cute? Yes. Acne-friendly? Not quite.

Why This Matters

Clients often come to me frustrated, saying:

“I’ve cleaned up my skincare, I’m using acne-safe products, I’m drinking water, and my hormones are balanced—but I’m still breaking out.”

If this sounds like you, it might be time to consider your daily habits more closely.

When your goal is clear skin that lasts, identifying these small but mighty acne triggers becomes essential. Because in many cases, it’s not about needing another serum or more pimple patches—it’s about paying attention to the seemingly harmless habits that are undermining your progress.

What to Do Next

If you're experiencing chin and jawline breakouts, try asking yourself:

“What habits do I have that might be triggering this area?”

Start observing your routines—how you sleep, how often you touch your face, how your pets interact with your skin. These little changes can have a big impact.

Remember: your skin is always communicating with you. It’s not just about what you put on your skin, but how you treat it throughout the day.
